Queen of Angels Catholic School has a dynamic elective program. Students in the 6th grade may choose between Band and Choir for their elective. In the 7th and 8th grades students can choose from any of the options listed below. Some electives are for the duration of the school year and others for a semester. Students choose their electives in May for the following school year.

 

    • ADVANCED ART & ANIMATION
      Students will experience more in depth art applications: paint on canvas; use mixed media; learn design techniques, and create a short animated film.
    • BAND
      The class incorporates different styles of band music. Students learn advanced instrumental performance skills to prepare for high school band. The band performs in the Christmas Nativity Program, and the Spring Concert. Other volunteer performance opportunities include Solo and Ensemble Festival, Archdiocesan Honor Band and District/All-State Bands.  
    • CHOIR
      Students study music theory, music history, and the effect music has on our society and how society affects our music.  The class works on contemporary and traditional church music, and incorporates unison singing, multiple-part singing, and cantoring. The group leads singing at all of school Masses and performs at the Nativity Program and Spring Concert.
    • CODING
      This course will provide opportunities to learn programming concepts for games and animations. Students will think like programmers and eventually will be required to develop their own ideas as well as implement and troubleshoot them.
    • DRAMATIC SPEECH
      This course will provide opportunities for dramatic and humorous interpretation and challenge students to find powerful moments in literature and recreate them for an audience.
    • FUTURE CITIES
      Students experience hands-on planning, designing and managing of a city for the future. Students learn what factors are important in selecting the location of their city, building infrastructure and transportation systems, establishing residential, recreational, commercial and industrial areas, etc. Specific guidelines for the Future City competition are discussed and time is given for working on different project components.  Students become familiar with Sim City 5 software, hear from guest speakers and are exposed to architectural principles.
    • GRAPHIC ARTS
      Students explore the use of Photoshop Elements 2 and Power Point to manipulate photos and create new and unique images.
    • ROBOTICS
      Students explore Lego Mindstorm NXT robotics. The students build Lego robots and program them to perform specific tasks.
    • VIDEO JOURNALISM
      Students learn to produce and run the school's live morning news show. They conduct research, write storyboards and scripts, film and edit short segments for the morning news. These segments include current events, geography and school news. The students work in collaborative groups.
